San Francisco: Missions District, Bay, and Dolores

January 18, 2012

There may be many reasons for buying a home in San Francisco, a warm city known for its vibrant and diverse culture. Job opportunities, the lifestyle and the climate may all be attractive features to potential residents of the city.

Those who are not well acquainted with the metropolitan area already would be wise to do some research on local communities as they consider where to settle. The Mission area contains several neighborhoods with some variation in character and style, all of which have a certain popularity. Many of the area's homes are Victorian-style houses.

Mission District

The Mission District is an area known as a dining destination and cultural hub rich in art and music, NabeWise notes. According to HGTV, the neighborhood benefits from proximity to the city's downtown area and easy access to public transit, making it a good place to visit or live. Residents may find these traits make the area popular with a mix of people, including blue-collar workers, young professionals and families.

The diverse mix of people and housing, which is affordable by San Francisco standards, may be appealing traits to prospective residents. Before deciding to make a purchase, however, home shoppers should examine the surrounding areas as well. The thriving nightlife may be a bit more active than some people care for, in which case another neighborhood may be preferred.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay, near South Beach, has relatively new light transportation and business. The area has made a comeback, with the city spending a significant amount to revitalize this neighborhood. The results have been favorable, sources suggest, but are still recent enough that prices are not as high as in similar neighborhoods with a longer history of popularity.

The neighborhood is populated largely by singles and young professionals, particularly technology employees working in the area according to HGTV.

Mission Dolores

Mission Dolores, while not far, is a different matter. Named for one of the city's oldest structures, this neighborhood is filled with historic homes. It also contains Dolores Park, which the San Francisco Chronicle notes many use as a place to retreat from the busy pace of the city at times.

The park contains both a natural area good for relaxation and sports facilities that many residents use for recreation when they want to be more active. This makes living nearby an attractive prospect for many.
